When I see this painting I can't help remembering something I read of Thomas Mann, that when he was in a Swiss hospital during a final illness, a pretty nurse came in to look after him, and he remarked later what a joyful thing it is to encounter a good-looking human being.
Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun had similar thoughts and wrote them down. Her memoirs have been translated and can be read online.
