You've taken my heart, now give me a hole

A persistent goal of capitalism is to create and substantiate personal identity through consumption, as anyone who can get through an hour of US television might affirm. The appalling and endless presentation of whorehouse commercialism mixed with subordinate amounts of meaningless information and brainlessly contrived drama has only one broad purpose: to recruit you as an accomplice.
Which is why a broken relationship, a messy divorce, a personal bankruptcy, a serious illness have one redeeming advantage: they force an interruption of the social anaesthesia and return you to who you are. One advantage of suffering, as opposed to the flight from it, is that it is at least real.
