Shanghai silent films

Many thanks to Nancy Ewart, who writes here (her entry for 12 January) about the Shanghai show opening at the Asian Arts Museum next month, and who refers us to the YouTube posts of silent movies from Shanghai in the 1930's featuring superstar Ruan Yinglu, "the Chinese Greta Garbo." In addition to "Little Toys," YouTube also offers "The Goddess," very capably directed by Wu Yonggang, which shows scenes of streetlife of Shanghai in the 30's, in addition to explicating numerous issues involved with being a single mom and a street prostitute synchronously.

The film can be seen as an attack upon capitalism, and it is hardly an accident that Chou En Lai and Mao Tse-Tung were busily organizing Shanghai factory workers at the time it was produced.
