This forgotten gateway to the underworld is located in a vacant lot off Grove Street just opposite City Hall. It was sealed off after a particularly truculent meeting of the Board of Supervisors in 1915, during the course of which a motion of censure had been introduced condemning Mayor "Sunny Jim" Rolph for appearing naked in a motion picture film with Fatty Arbuckle and aspiring actress Bambina Delmonte. After sixteen hours of continuous debate, some shadowy figures wearing fireproof trench-coats arose from the spectators' gallery and attacked two of the supervisors who were opposing the measure, and flew off with them into the night skies far above City Hall.
