Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun: Self-portrait in a straw hat (1782)

When I see this painting I can't help remembering something I read of Thomas Mann, that when he was in a Swiss hospital during a final illness, a pretty nurse came in to look after him, and he remarked later what a joyful thing it is to encounter a good-looking human being.

Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun had similar thoughts and wrote them down. Her memoirs have been translated and can be read online.

Jonathan was the victim of some experiments I was doing with fog filters. We first encountered each other in the Safeway at Church and Market in the early 70's. He was wearing bell-bottom blues and his hair was half-way down his back.
